Don't Wait Until It's Too Late To Protect Your Child From Vision Loss
Act now to protect your child's vision from Myopia and myopic eye disease.
Did you know that myopic progression can start before a child experiences blurry vision?
At Eyesave Optical, we use the latest equipment in diagnosing and treating your child's Myopia.
What is myopia?
Myopia (AKA Shortsightedness) is a condition where a person has worse long distance vision and relies on spectacle or other correction to see clearly.
Myopia is mainly caused by the lengthening or stretching of the retina, also known as axial elongation.
In children, Myopia is a progressive condition, in which the retina progressively lengthens and/or stretches. Excessive stretching of the retina can lead to sight threatening conditions such as myopic maculopathy, retinal detachment and early onset cataracts.

High myopia, defined as a prescription of -6.00 or a 26.5mm retina, increases the risk of retinal detachment and myopic maculopathy by 21 and 41 times respectively.
Myopic progression is linked to excessive near work, a family history of myopia and lack of outdoor exposure.
How to manage it?
Changes in the retina cannot be reversed, it can only be slowed down going forward. This is why it is important to get tested before it is too late.
Visual hygiene: Some simple lifestyle changes can go a long way in reducing Myopic progression.
Spending 2 hours a day outdoors, limiting near work (Books, Computers, screens) to less than 2 hours outside of school, and following the 20/20 rule (20 minutes of near work = 20 second break looking far away)
Eye length measurement (Biometry): The most important measurement in treating Myopia is not the prescription. It is actually how much the retina (back of the eye) has stretched or lengthened.
At Eyesave we have the latest in Biometry, capable of accurately measuring the length of the retina. This ensures the most accurate results and management.
Myopia control glasses (Miyosmart, Myostock)
Specialised lenses designed to slow Myopia by redirecting peripheral light to specific areas of the retina. Shown in studies to slow down Myopia by at least 50%.

Atropine:
A safe and effective daily treatment for Myopia. In the form of eye drops, when combined with spectacle correction, it is effective to at least 50%.
Binocular vision:
Binocular vision abnormalities or issues with how the eyes work together, can lead to higher rates of progression. Treatment using Bifocal lenses, multifocals and sometimes vision therapy can help reduce myopic progression.
What can you do?
Don’t wait until their vision is blurry. A child's retina can start progressively stretching before they experience blur. Once the retina lengthens it can’t be reversed, only slowed down.
